Etant donné... un jardin MITNICK.RODDIER.HICKS : Stewart HICKS, |
|
Sitting among a purposely bare and indeterminate terrain, a narrow and dense strip of greenery is arranged to produce a new landscape. This is a garden to go! Roll it out upon a parking lot, a rooftop, or any available piece of space. This stroll garden features a transportable horizon produced by two opposing mirrors to form an endless allée of trees. We find two contrasting attitudes in the arrangement of the garden space: the loosely arranged, tactile vegetation of the stroll garden, and the formal geometry of the infinite pathway. It is homeless, yet playful, juxtaposing disparate elements and conflicting sensibilities. The title takes its name from a famous piece of art by Marcel Duchamp, the French-born Dada artist who established himself in the United States (entitled “Etant donnés: 1º la chute d'eau / 2º le gaz d'éclairage” -- Philadelphia Museum of Art). Something between a diorama and a peep-show, Duchamp's final masterpiece is a tableau, only visible through a peephole in a wooden door.
